Cappadocia region was formed 60 million years ago by erosion of soft layers of lava and ash from Mount Erciyes (Argeus). Human settlement at the Cappadocia region dates back to the Paleolithic era. The lands where the Hittites once lived have been one of the most important centers of Christianity in the later periods. Houses and churches carved into the caves . Rocks turned the region into a huge heaven for Christians escaping from the dominance of the Roman Empire.
The surreal, brilliant white traverteni terraces and warm, limpid pools of Pamukkale hang, like the petrified cascade of a mighty waterfall. From the rim of a steep valley side in Turkey’s picturesque southwest. Truly spectacular in its own right, the geological phenomenon that is Pamukkale. Literally “Cotton Castle” in Turkish, is also the site of the remarkably well-preserved ruins of the Greek-Roman city of Hierapolis.
Ephesus was an ancient port city whose well-preserved ruins are in modern-day Turkey. The city was once considered the most important Greek city and the most important trading center in the Mediterranean region. Throughout history, Ephesus survived multiple attacks and changed hands many times between conquerors. It was also a hotbed of early Christian evangelism and remains an important archaeological site and Christian pilgrimage destination.
Fethiye is a tourist town with an international atmosphere. It has an excellent marina and good night life. The town also serves as an excellent base for touring the inland countryside, and is probably the only city in the world where you’ll find sarcophaguses in the streets. These pre-Roman Lycian relics are especially spectacular when floodlit at night. The town has a population of around 50,000, but the population increases dramatically during the high season, from April to end of October, when off-shore residents spend their summers at their second homes.
