Istanbul is a city of fantastic history, culture and beauty. Called Byzantium in ancient times, the city’s name was changed to Constantinople in 324 CE when it was rebuilt by the first Christian Roman Emperor, Constantine. The name “Istanbul”, which – perhaps surprisingly – comes from Greek and could be translated as a corruption of “to the city”. While the term had been in widespread use for centuries, it only became the official name of the city upon the foundation of the Republic of Turkey in the 1920s. The most populous city in Europe. Istanbul forms the financial center of Turkey and confidently straddles the borders between Asia and Europe as it has for millennia. This is the result when you mix ancient Christendom, a medieval metropolis and the modern Middle East. Situated on either side of the Bosporus, Istanbul retains its metropolitan status. The city’s population is more than 14 million people. It’s one of the largest cities in the world. Lauded in antiquity as “the second Rome”. This is a city where you most certainly should roam — culture and excitement lie around every corner and more than 2000 years of history await you.
Bursa is the fourth-largest Turkish city, is in the northwestern part of the country, just sout of the Sea of Marmara. The first impression of the city might be concrete-ridden modern metropolis that is betraying its largely recognized “Green Bursa”. It’s historical prominency as being the cradle of the Ottoman state. Bursa and a nearby village of Cumalıkızık were added to the Unesco world heritage list. The remains at several sites illustrate the creation of an urban and rural system establishing the Ottoman Empire in the early 14th century.

There is no better way to escape the bustle of Istanbul for a day than with a visit to the idyllic Princes’ Islands. Enjoy cool breezes and charming sights along the way to Büyükada, the largest Island in the chain. Famous for their mild climates, lush vegetation, and ornate Ottoman Houses, all the islands are unspoiled by traffic. Instead of cars there are carriages, called phaetons, which we will use to tour the island and its beautiful scenery studded with elegant mansions draped with purple bougainvillea, reminiscent of a more leisured and graceful era. We will enjoy our lunch at the best of one of the many excellent fresh fish restaurants that line the waterfront, gazing across the Asian shore of Istanbul, so close - though it feels worlds away.
In the morning, you will depart by ferry to Yalova. After which drive to Bursa for a visit to Ulucamii (Great Mosque), Cumalikizik Village, Green Mosque, Green Tomb and Uludag by cable car for a nice view of the mountain. After your tour of Bursa late evening, return back to Istanbul around 8:30 pm. Overnight in Istanbul. (B, L)
